Canon DC230
After the early hit of the Canon DC220, the Japanese company is out with its big brother this time, the Canon DC230. Looking at both of them its hard to distinguish between them. The only thing different is the darker accent of the DC230. Both the DVD camcorders have the same size, shape and design. The camera measures 2.1 inches thick and weighs 159 ounces with the battery and DVD inserted. To make it even harder to spot the 230 out of the two is the fact that apart from the 1.07 MegaPixel resolution of the LCD and a bundled remote control, the characteristics of both the 220 and the 230 are almost same.
This camcorder offers a great deal of control, but to exercise the control is not always easy at first. The controls on the DC230 looks a bit crowded. But once you know how to use it, it’s not all that difficult to use it. Like a Big Brother, the DC230 is endowed and gives you ample discretion while using it. Everything you ask in a high end camcorder is here, automatic and manual focus and exposure control.
The latter augmented by programmed auto exposure settings lets you quickly adapt to a variety of shooting circumstances. In addition to standout features you nearly have a two megapixels of still-photo resolution. Also the shutter speed setting is as slow as 1/8 of a second. The best part about the DC series is that you can directly record the movie or your moments on the DVD. So you don’t need to do the extra work on the computer. Also at a touch of button you can instantly share your videos with your loved ones.
The 35X zoom lens, which the DC230 has inherited from the DC220, helps produce superb color fidelity. The autoexposure responds precisely to lighting changes. Auto focus performs accurately, even at the far end of the zoom range. The zoom motor is operable for traditional shooting with a right-side-mounted rocker switch. For very low shots with a top-handle-mounted set of buttons and also with the remote control. The camera’s variable zoom settings let you control how quickly the zoom motor accelerates. The DC230 gives pristine images and superior color fidelity within the limits of DVD camcorders.
The DC230 which is considered to be of a lower range than other standard definition DVD camcorders will surprise you with its quality. The major change is the MP sensor. From the earlier 0.68 MP it has an advanced 1.7 MP sensor. With this new improvisation, there an extreme improvement in the picture quality. Even small details turn out to be clear in the LCD. The 35x lens focuses quickly at most of the magnification factors and from far distances also. Despite the long reach of its len’s, the DC230 uses a digital-stabilization system and Optical image stabilization. This system shifts some of the optical elements within the lens in order to reduce shake. The DC230′s system brings down a number of effective pixels when recording to correct and reduce camera shake.
This thing works well and does not affect the video. But you will get the best results from this camcorder when you set it on a tripod and disable the image-stabilization feature.
