Canon EOS 400D rebel XTi

The XTi is a 10 mega pixel camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen and is an upgraded version of the Canon Digital Rebel XT. The camera comes equipped with features such as a new dust cleaning system and is compatible with 50 lenses and various accessories.

The XTi has dimensions of 127x94x65mm and weighs around 510 g without battery. This has a metal look and a sturdy feel to it even though majority of the camera is built with plastic. The camera can be gripped easily and comfortably as compared to its predecessor. The XTi has a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and an optical view finder aswell which provides a coverage range of 95%. The LCD monitor has 7 brightness levels, wide viewing angle and up to 10x zoom playback. While in shooting mode the LCD provides information such as Shutter speed, Aperture, Sensitivity (ISO), Exposure mode, Meter / Exposure compensation, Bracketing, Flash compensation, White balance & fine tuning, Metering mode, Custom function set, Auto focus mode, Drive mode, Auto focus areas, Black & white mode, Beep, Red-eye reduction, Image size / quality, Battery status and Frames remaining. The camera also has IR meter and sensor which can detect the presence of an eye thus providing information on weather the monitor needs to be turned on or off. The five way navigation buttons are very useful and helps accessing various menu options with ease. The camera boosts a DIGIC II image processor along with automatic dust removal technology and a dedicated AE Lock button.

The XTi provides excellent picture quality whatever be the condition. It performs extremely well while taking shots of fast moving objects. The photos taken outdoors have good sharpness with the focus maintained even in the edges. Subject detailing is good and the colours produced by the XTi are natural and vibrant. The colour balance is maintained well and its performance while taking pictures in dim light is impressive to say the least. The various ISO modes available are ISO 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600. One can also make use of auto mode which ranges between ISO 100-400. Pictures taken using the ISO mode are good but do have some amount of noise interference. Images are stored in JPEG format with resolutions of 3888 x 2592, 2816 x 1880 and 1936 x 1288.

The camera has two focus modes, Auto Focus and Manual Focus. The auto focus can work within a range of -0.5 to 18 EV at 23°C, ISO 100. The Auto focus intern has 3 modes to choose from which are AI Focus, One shot and AI Servo. Auto Focus point selection can be done manually or automatically as per photographers wish. The shooting modes available are Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE, Manual, Auto depth-of-field, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Night portrait, Auto and Flash off. The camera has metering range of EV 1.0 – 20 EV @ 23°C, ISO 100 and 50 mm F1.4. The different modes are Evaluative 35-zone, Partial 9% at center and Center-weighted average. The XTi has shutter speeds ranging from 30 – 1/4000 seconds and aperture values between F1.0 – F91 having 0.3 EV steps. The different white balance options to choose from are Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash and one can also customize the white balance settings according to his needs. The different picture style options in the XTi are Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, User 1, User 2 and User 3. The sharpness ranges between 0 to 7, contrast, colour tone and saturation can be varied between -4 to +4. The camera also has a Built-in E-TTL II popup flash with red eye reduction technology. The various flash modes available are Auto, Manual Flash On/Off and Red-Eye Reduction. The flash can cover up to 17 mm focal length. If one wants additional flash power then external flash, the E-TTL II auto flash with EX-series Speedlites or Hot-shoe can be used.

The Playback mode in the XTi has the following options to choose from, Single image, Single image with info (histogram brightness / RGB), Magnified view (1.5 – 10x in 15 steps, browsable), 9 image index, Auto play, Image rotation and Jump (by 10, 100 or date). The camera also has a wide variety of languages which can be used. These are English, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Spanish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese. The XTi can be connected to external devices using USB 2.0, Video out or E3 type wired remote control. The camera uses Lithium-Ion NB-2LH rechargeable battery for power and is compatible with Compact Flash Type I/II/Micro drive for storage purposes.

The Rebel XTi is although quiet similar to its predecessor the Rebel XT but improves in one place for which the camera is truly meant, taking high quality pictures.
