Canon Power Shot A630

The A630 is an eight mega pixel digital camera with 4x optical zoom. The basic aim of Canon is to replace SLR cameras with the power shot range of cameras. The A630 provides a wide variety of features including manual exposure and focus. The camera has some fairly high end features but still is able to maintain its compact shape.

The A630 is a bit more on the hefty side with respect to size, having dimensions of 09.4 x 66.0 x 49.1mm and weighing around 245g. The camera has 4x optical zoom having focal length equivalent to 35 – 140mm in 35mm format. Along with optical zoom this also has a safety zoom feature. The safety zoom can be used only at low resolutions and allows an additional 1.6x or 2x zoom. The A630 has a 2.5″ LCD screen which works extremely well in low light conditions. The camera also has an optical view finder.

The A630 performs well in outdoors aswell as indoors. Colours are vibrant and natural with the colour balance maintained well. The pictures do not loose focus at the edges and the images come out sharp. One place where like most of the other cameras the A630 struggles is the loss of details. The camera fails to handle the glare of the sun resulting in loss of detailing of the subject to be pictured. The skin tones have a very natural look to them and the colours in general have a very strong feel to them aswell. Even while performing in low light conditions the A630 performs well. The pictures taken are properly focused although there is slight red eye that develops but is handled well by the A630. The camera provides even better results during macro shots. Subjects are well focused and the pictures come out having a very natural feel to it. The camera fails to keep up the level of photograph quality and provides poor results when ISO settings are used. The various ISO settings available are ISO 80, 100, 200, 400 and 800 along with auto and High ISO auto. None of them provide decent results with good amount of noise interference involved in nearly all of the ISO settings.

The A630 requires 0.40 seconds for a single shot and 8.35 seconds for five consecutive shots. The shutter speed varies between 15 to 1/2500 seconds. The photographer can choose between nine point or one point focusing system and also has the option for fully manual focusing. The macro photography has a minimum focusing distance of 1cm. The aperture speed of the A630 is f/2.8 (W) – f/4.1 (T).

There are various scene modes available to help the camera use the optimum settings for a particular photograph. These include Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Night Snapshot, Kids and Pet. A number of colour effects can also be applied to the picture and the photographer can choose from a wide variety of range. The various colour effects involved are Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, Lighter Skin Tone, Darker Skin Tone, Positive Film and Custom Colour. The camera comes with a built in flash and has distance of 4.2m. This decrease to 3m with the camera completely zoomed. The different flash modes available are Auto, Manual Flash On / Off, Slow Sync Speed and Red-eye Reduction and flash exposure compensation along with bracketing. There is an option for external flash unit aswell with the Canon High Power Flash HF-DC1 being bought and attached separately. The different white balance options available are Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H, Underwater and Custom. The camera also has a continuous shooting mode available which allows the photographer to keep taking pictures at a rate of 1.8 frames per second until the memory card is full.

Normal Self timer is available which can delay pictures up to 10 seconds maximum. It also comes with an additional mode which allows the photographer decide the time delay up to a maximum of 30 seconds. The A630 also has a histogram available. Voice memo adding option to a picture is also available in the A630. Movies are recorded in AVI format and the camera also captures environment sounds. The different resolutions available in the A630 are 640 x 480 @ 30 frames per second, 320 x 240 @ 15 frames per second and 160 x 120 @ 15 frames per second. Another extremely impressive feature is the ability to zoom in and out even while the movie is being recorded. Movies can have a maximum recording time of 1 hour. The camera can also be connected to television sets, computers and PictBridge compatible printers. It also has the WP-DC8, which is water proof case compatible with the A630 making it usable at a depth of 40m. The camera makes use of Four AA batteries and is supplied with a 16mb SD card. The A630 is compatible with SD Memory Card, SDHC Memory Card and Multimedia Card.

The A630 is one of the best cameras available in the market with a wide range of features, decent photo quality and an affordable price tag.
