Canon Power Shot SD1000
The SD1000 can be called as an upgraded version of the SD600. With a higher resolution of 7.1 mega pixels from the 6 mega pixel present in the SD600, this also has some other new features added to it.
Looking at the basic outlook of the SD1000 it has a very similar look to the SD600 but Canon has made a couple of changes internally. This has dimensions of 85.9 x 53.5 x 19.4mm and weighs around 125 g. The camera uses a Digic III processor instead of the Digic II this intern provides it with advantages such as longer lasting battery life, better start up speed and improved shutter lag and auto focus. The SD1000 also provides higher ISO sensitivity in the form of ISO1600 along with face detection technology and red eye reduction technique. The camera has a retro look to it and comes in two colour combinations, black-on-silver and silver-on-silver.
No manual exposure is provided in the SD1000 which would not go down well with everyone. The 3X optical zoom which can cover an equivalent range of 35mm to 105mm in a 35mm film has a maximum aperture ranging between f/2.8 to f/4.9. Along with the 3x optical zoom this also has a 4x digital zoom. The 2.5-inch, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color LCD screen present is one of the most impressive features of the SD1000. This has a special coating which allows the photographer to view the LCD properly without worrying about the glare of the sun. Pictures can be viewed from various angles and along with the LCD this also has a small optical viewfinder.
Looking at the speed of the SD1000, it takes 1 second to startup and capture the first picture. With flash turned off the time difference between images is just 1.50 seconds. This increases to 2.50 seconds with flash turned on. The shutter speed has a range of 15-1/1500 seconds. The image recognition software present in the camera works properly. The TTL auto focus system has focusing frame of 9-point AiAF/1-point AF which is fixed to the center. The shooting distance depends on the mode in use. While in normal mode it varies from 30cm to infinity, in macro it’s between 3-50cm (wide) and 30-50cm (tele) and in digital macro it is 3-10cm (wide).
The images produced by the SD1000 are impressive. Outdoor shots are sharp and focused. Colours produced are vibrant and natural. Colour balance is maintained well and saturation levels of the colours are not high. Indoor shots captured are good but the camera seems to struggle when used in dim light. ISO shots are decent with pictures taken using sensitivity settings below ISO 800 coming out good with low noise interference. The images as expected tend to falter when using ISO 1600. The shadow detailing is lost and noise interference increases considerably.
The various ISO options to choose from are ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, Auto and High ISO Auto. The camera has a built in flash and the various options present are Auto, Auto w/ Red-eye Reduction, Auto w/ Slow Synchro, Flash On, Flash On w/ Red-eye Reduction, Flash On w/ Slow Synchro and Flash Off. The flash has a range of 50cm – 3.5m (wide) and 50cm – 2.0m (tele) in normal mode, and in macro mode its is between 30-50cm. The various shooting modes present are Auto, Camera M, Portrait, Special Scene, Night Snapshot, Color Accent, Color Swap, Digital Macro, Stitch Assist and Movie. The Special scene mode includes Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Aquarium, Underwater, Indoor, Kids and Pets. Various photo effects can also be used which are Vivid, Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, Vivid Red, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, Positive Film, Lighter Skin Tone, Darker Skin Tone and Custom Color.
Images are stored in JPEG format with 5 different resolutions to choose from, 3,072 x 1,728 (Widescreen), 3,072 x 2,304 (Large), 2,592 x 1,944 (Medium 1), 2,048 x 1,536 (Medium 2), 1,600 x 1,200 (Medium 3) and 640 x 480 (Small). Videos are captured in AVI format and the corresponding sounds are also recorded. The resolutions present are 640 x 480 @ 30 fps, 640 x 480 @ 0.5 fps/1 fps, 320 x 240 @ 15 fps, 320 x 240 @ 60 fps and 160 x 120 @ 15 fps. Movies can be captured for a maximum time of 1 hour depending up on the resolution in use. The camera is compatible with PictBridge, Canon Direct Print and Bubble Jet Direct for the purpose of printing. This also has USB connectivity and Audio/Video output. The SD1000 uses Battery Pack NB-4L for power. For increasing the storage memory in the SD1000 one can use SD Memory Card, SDHC Memory Card or Multimedia Card. This also has self timer which can delay a picture by 10 seconds maximum.
The SD1000 is an easy to own camera which provides good picture quality. Although it does lack in a couple of places but still the features that this camera provides at a low price will surely make it a hit among the masses.
