Canon Power Shot SD850

The SD850 is an 8 mega pixel camera with 4x optical zoom. This makes use of a Digic III processor which helps providing better quality pictures and functionality. This has some really impressive feature list which includes Face Detection and Red-Eye Correction technologies among them.

The camera has dimensions of 3.56 x 2.22 x 1.04 inches and weighs approximately 165 g without battery and memory card installed. The camera has 16 x digital zoom along with 4 x optical zoom with focal length equivalent to 35 – 140mm in 35mm format. The camera physically has a very compact feel to it. The shape of the camera is such that it can be easily held and worked with in one hand. Even carrying it from one place to another is not a problem with the SD850 being an average weight camera.

The camera has a 2.5-inch LCD screen and an optical viewfinder aswell. The 2.5-inch, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT color LCD has 100% picture coverage. As compared to this the optical viewfinder shows only 78% of the total coverage area. The LCD can be viewed with ease under the sun and quiet frankly gives a proper look form any possible angle. The camera has a flash recycle time of 7.5 seconds which is a bit more than one would want. Image stabilization present in the Canon SD850 is very effective for providing shake free images.  In low light conditions the stabilizer helps dealing with slow shutter speed. Overall the pictures taken in dim light provide excellent results. The photos come out properly exposed. The camera maintains this level during macro shots aswell. Face detection software present in the camera works fast and accurately. The face detection is not limited to only one mode. Colours produced by the SD850 while taking outdoor shots are natural but have a saturated feel to it. The colours while taking pictures indoor have a less saturated feel to them. The ISO levels in the SD850 are 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and the Auto and High ISO mode can also be used. The pictures taken can be a bit out of focus at times but satisfactory levels can be achieved when pictures are taken in bright conditions. Photos are stored in JPEG format and can be taken in any of the following resolutions 3264 x 2448, 2592 x 1944, 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, 640 x 480 and wide screen 3264 x 1832.

The shooting distance varies depending on the mode in use. In normal mode this ranges between 50cm-infinity, macro mode has a range of 2-50cm (wide) and 40-50cm (tele). The digital macro has range of 2-50cm (wide). The SD850 has shutter speeds of 15–1/1600 sec with the speed changing as the shooting mode changes. The different metering options are Evaluative, Center-weighted average and Spot. The White balance options included in the SD850 are Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent and Fluorescent H. One can also set white balance option manually. The camera has a built in flash and the different modes present are Auto, auto with red-eye reduction, flash on with red-eye reduction, flash on, flash off and slow Synchro. Shooting modes to choose from are Auto, Camera M, Special Scene, Color Accent, Color Swap, Digital Macro, Stitch Assist and Movie. The photographer can also choose from a wide variety of scene modes to help camera make use of the optimum settings available to it for capturing the perfect picture. The different scene modes in the SD850 are Portrait, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Aquarium, Underwater, Indoor, Kids & Pets, Night Snapshot and Creative Light Effect. There are some colour effects that can be used by the photographer to make the picture look perfect. They are Vivid, Vivid Blue, Vivid Green, Vivid Red, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White, Positive Film, Lighter Skin Tone, Darker Skin Tone and Custom Color. The SD850 allows the user to keep taking pictures continuously @ 1.3 shots/seconds until the memory is full.

The camera also has a self timer which can delay a picture to be taken by 10 seconds. Movies are stored in AVI format and the camera captures the adjacent sounds aswell while filming. Resolutions of 640 x 480 / 320 x 240 can record at a speed of 30 fps/15 fps for 60 minutes. One can also record movies in the 640 x 480 resolution for 2 hours at 0.5 fps/1 fps. Movies can also be recorded in 320 x 240 resolution having speed of 60 fps for 1 minute or in 160 x 120 resolutions at 15 fps for 3 minutes. The camera has USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface, Picture Transfer Protocol and Audio/Video output for SD850 to be connected to various external devices. This makes use of Battery Pack NB-5L for power. The SD850 is compatible with SD/SDHC memory cards or Multimedia Cards.

Overall the SD850 is camera which can be described as average, clicking picture with average photo quality, having average weight and providing average features as compared to most cameras available in the market within the same price range.
