Canon Power Shot SX100

This is a compact looking 8 mega pixel camera which physically can be described in a single word as large. This is not pocket sized camera so portability is a bit of a problem but if one can look over it; this one has some really impressive features present.

The SX100 is an 8 mega pixel camera with 10 x optical zoom having focal length equivalent to 36-360mm in 35mm format. Along with the massive 10 x optical zoom this also provides with 4 x digital zoom. The camera has dimensions of 109x71x46mm and weighs around 265 grams with battery and memory card attached. Even though the camera is a bit bigger than some of its competitors but one would not have that much trouble holding onto it due to its shape. Taking photographs by holding the camera in one hand is not a big issue with no sensors, microphones or flash strobes to get covered accidentally by the hand. This has a 2.5-inch P-Si TFT LCD screen which provides 100% coverage but lacks viewfinder. The SX100 has a good face detection technique called as the focus check function which allows checking the faces of everyone in the photo before clicking. The camera is made easier to understand and use with very practical naming of buttons.


The SX100 has a stabilization function that helps capturing fast moving subjects. Maximum aperture has a range of f/2.8 at wide angle and f/4.3 at telephoto. The pictures obtained from the SX100 are sharp and focus is maintained. The zoom in the camera is fast and accurate. With the help of the Face Detection AF the SX100 locate up to 9 faces in a single photo. If the photographer wants more control over the picture then he can make use of manual focus mode which allows the photographer to focus manually. The user interface is easy to understand and use if you are a professional but its might take some getting used to for amateurs. Pictures are stored in JPEG format and have resolutions which include 3264 x 2448, 2592 x 1944, 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, 640 x 480 and 3264 x 1832.

The ISO setting ranges between ISO 80 to ISO 1600 and the auto ISO mode along with the High ISO auto mode is also present. The camera also comes equipped with Canon’s Auto ISO Shift function which boosts ISO sensitivity when the camera detects that a shake may result in blurred image. A photographer has a wide variety of modes to choose from including Auto, Program AE, Shutter Priority AE, Aperture Priority AE, Manual, Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Special Scene, Stitch Assist and Movie. The different scene modes to choose from are Portrait, Landscape, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Night Scene, Indoor, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks and Aquarium. The aperture priority ranges between f/2.8 to f/8.0 and shutter priority is from 1/2,500 to 15 seconds. In fully manual mode the camera provides the information whether the settings choosen by the photographer may lead to over exposed images. There are a few white balance options to help the photographer get the proper picture composition. The various options to choose from are Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H and Custom. The different image parameters in the SX100 are My Colors Off, Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White and Custom Color. The camera can take single shot in 0.30 seconds while five consecutive shots can be obtained in 7.72 seconds. With flash on this time increases to 2 seconds for a single shot and 2.55 seconds for five pictures one after the other.

The camera uses 2x AA Alkaline or NiMH batteries for power. The self timer in the camera can delay the picture to be taken by 10 seconds. The SX100 can be connected to computers, television sets and PictBridge printers. The camera comes supplied with a 32MB SD card and is compatible with SDHC cards. There are three resolutions for capturing movie clips. They are 640 x 480 @ 30fps, 320 x 240 @ 30fps and 160 x 120 @ 15fps. Movies with resolutions of 640 x 480 and 320 x 240 can be captured for an hour while one can record up to 3 minutes by using resolution 160 x 120. Movies are stored in AVI format.

Overall the camera is easier to learn, use and offers a lot of room from a photographer’s prospective in developing his photographic skills. The SX100 is one of the best cameras around and can be described with adjectives such as compact, versatile and affordable.
