Digital Camera
The word digital has been derived from the Latin term ‘digitus’- meaning finger. The word digital was formerly used for the act of counting on the finger. Digitus also means counting discreetly, or quietly. Presently, the term digital technology is used to define a system that makes uses of discreet values like electronic voltages. Discrete values are mainly non – numerical symbols, which represent numbers. Letters and icons used for transmission display, storage, input and processing come under this category. These are different from the analog system, which depicts a perennial value spectrum.
Digital technology has revolutionized the world of photography in recent years. A digital camera is a modern electronic device, which is used to take and store photographs by using digital technology. It is interesting to see how digital cameras work. A digital camera is often defined, as an electronic gadget, which is used to encode an image. It stores photographs in the form of digital data. The digital images, which are encoded by this kind of a camera, can also be stored to make copies at a later point of time. Digital data can be understood as a bank of still images, which are captured and stored by the camera.
Electronic cameras capture and store digital data instead of traditional photographic films. Previously cameras came in two forms – normal and video. Traditional cameras used photographic films for imaging and video cameras and recorded images to magnetic tapes in an analog format. The new models of digital cameras are more versatile, in terms of functionality. Modern technology and advancements have further enabled digital cameras, to combine video and sound recording facilities with photography.
Sir Eugene F. Lally discovered digital photography, while working in Let Propulsion Laboratory. He documented his findings in a report, which described how to produce photographs through digital technology, with the use of a mosaic photo sensor. The invention of digital camera has revolutionized the field of photography by eliminating the tedious procedure of loading films and print development. The thrill of instant gratification in seeing and showing pictures immediately after clicking them far exceeds the pleasure of reel photography. Digital technology also offers a variety of choice in terms of features and usability to the ordinary user of cheap digital cameras. More and more people are now able to take up photography as a profession, because of the user friendliness of digital cameras.
The most basic digital cameras are perfectly suitable for taking family photographs, on normal outings. A child can also take good photographs with a digital camera. Professional digital cameras come with multiple choices and endless features, to suit the needs, of various trades. Multi functionality is an integral characteristic of modern digital cameras. A dynamic electronic devise, it is far outselling its 35mm film counterpart in the western market. This is not only due to consumerism, but also, because of the advantages of digital technology. Technological development has further diminished the cost and since often at a discount, digital cameras are presently a good investment.
