Nikon D100
Nikon has launched D100, a compact and lightweight digital SLR camera that matches the requirements of not only amateurs but also professional photographers. It weighs approximately 700gm and comes with TTL optical viewfinder. It has a 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor, which provides a resolution of 3008×2000 pixels. An array of filters is used with the CCD sensor to reduce the alaising effect and to filter out the infrared rays. It boosts a 1.8-inch TFT colour LCD monitor that displays the images to the user even before the pictures are actually clicked.
Nikon has carefully placed various buttons on camera at appropriate positions that make the handling of Nikon D100 quite simple. On the whole the camera has 10 buttons on rear and three levers. Also, the position of the LCD screen protects it from scratches.
Nikon D100 has two focus modes namely, manual focus mode and automatic focus mode to allow the user select between the manual control over focussing system and the automated one. Its Interchangeable “F” mount lens design allows user to use various available Nikkor lenses. It’s Shutter speed can be varied from 1/4,000 of a second to 30 seconds. It can be used at maximum shutter speed to capture photographs at rapid pace.
It also has three colour modes and an additional colour fine-tuning adjustment setting so that the colour settings in the photographs can be manipulated. Even the tone and sharpness of the pictures can be adjusted to suit the needs of the user. Nikon has also provided an in-built pop-up flash that operates in five modes to allow camera usage even in dark conditions. To record videos Nikon 100D has to be operated in Continuous Shooting mode. Besides the modes above mentioned, the camera works in additional modes like the Self-Timer mode to automatically click pictures after a certain time delay. Grid lines which act as reference can also be displayed on the viewfinder if required.
The pictures are saved in one of the three file formats namely-JPEG, uncompressed TIFF, and RAW file format. The JPEG format compresses pictures so that they require less memory when compared to the RAW format, but the photo quality deteriorates. The images can be stored on CompactFlash card. It is also compatible with IBM Microdrive cards having memory of 1 GB. Nikon also provides an USB 1.1 cable for quick transfer of the files from camera to computers or laptops. Nikon 100D comes with Nikon View 5 software that is loaded on a CD. The software is user friendly and can be used to tailor the photographs according to the user’s needs. The videos recorded on the camera can also be played on television directly using NTSC video cable.
It derives power from lithium-ion battery pack or optional AC adapter. An optional Nikon Multi-Function battery pack can also be used to enable long uninterrupted shooting hours. To prevent all the connectors from dust or any other damage, Nikon provides protective rubber covers over them. Nikon D100 is an easy-to-use and lightweight camera loaded with a lot of useful features that improve the picture quality.
