The D40 has dimensions of 127 x 63.5 x 93.98mm and weighs 482g without battery and memory card. This comes equipped with 6.1 mega pixel CCD imager and has an excellent grip. This has a very similar look to any of the other camera in the D-range produced by Nikon. Holding a D40 gives the photographer a very nice feeling and one can even take pictures with the camera held in one hand. The camera has shutter speeds ranging between 1/4000 to 30 seconds and has an extremely low shutter sound. The camera has a Silent Wave Motor which allows the 18-55mm AF-S lens present in the D40 to focus without making too much noise. The control layout of the D40 is easy to understand and use. Buttons are placed in such a way that the user can easily access them while taking pictures and make the required adjustments. This has a 2.5 inch LCD screen which is bright and vibrant. As compared to the size of the camera the screen is extremely large and takes up most of the space at the back of the D40. The LCD screen is not only big but it provides great results even when viewed under bright sunlight. The LCD screen has a special cover for protection against scratches and allows images to be enlarged by 19 times its original size. The low-temperature polysilicon TFT LCD has various brightness levels which can be used to change the brightness as per user needs. A Fixed eye-level penta-Dach mirror type optical viewfinder is present which has built-in diopter adjustment and frame coverage of 95%.

This is a feature even more advanced and high end cameras lack, thus making the D40 special and makes focusing easy. The pictures from the D40 are not outstanding but still the camera performs well. In outdoor conditions the camera produces images that are sharp and focused. The place where the camera struggles is when the pictures are taken in dim light. The photos come out over exposed and blurry. When the ISO sensitivities are used then the images come out quiet brilliant. Even when the images are taken in high ISO option such as ISO 1600 the noise interference is less as compared to other cameras in the same range and the ISO levels vary between ISO 200 to ISO 1600. The colours generated by the D40 are vibrant and have a natural feel to them.
