Olympus e-500

The Olympus e-500 is the third model following the Four Thirds standards in the Olympus E-series of SLRs, E-1 was the first, and then came the E-300 and now the E-500. The Olympus e-500 sports a larger LCD screen [2.5”] than that of the Olympus E-300 [1.8”], more shooting and metering options, digital filters and dual memory card slots. The 8.0 Mega pixel Olympus E-500 digital cameras comes with a 14 – 45 mm, F3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital lens, a BLM-1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack, a battery charger, shoulder strap, a USB cable, a A/V cable and 215 page camera manual.

The Olympus e-500 has a 2.5” Hyper Crystal LCD screen with 215.000 pixels, on which the colors are vibrant; the photographs appear to be unusually sharp and even the contrast is not too bad. The LCD screen not only has a 160 degree viewing angle but it also offers a high level of performance in direct sunlight. There is a separate screen which shows the information about the image which is the file number, date and image quality. Apart from this there is another screen which shows the exposure information including a separate histogram for each RGB color. The Olympus e-500 has a anti-dust reduction system where the ultra sonic waves shake the dust off the cameras sensors at 32.000 cycles per second as soon as the camera is switched on, making the sensor dust free. The camera has a very power full pop up flash which releases automatically whenever needed; a hot shoe is also included.

The Olympus e-500 also offers Full Auto and Program modes and various scene modes such as Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Sports, Night Portrait, Landscape and Portrait, Children, High key, Low key, and Candle modes. The Olympus e-500 also offers color modes such as black and white and sepia with additional color filters like yellow to add darkness to the skies, red to beautify the sunset and green to improve the skin tones. Black and white images can also be tinted with Blue, Purple and Green to enhance the photographs. A memory card does not accompany the Olympus e-500, both XD and Compact Flash memory cards can be used, although the Compact Flash is a cheaper option, a 1 GB card can prove to be a good start. The E-500 uses the same BLM-1 lithium-ion rechargeable battery as the E-1 and E-300. The battery offers a hefty 10.8 WH of energy, which is too powerful to be true; the Olympus E-500 can take 400 shots per charge, it takes around 5 hours to completely charge the battery.

The Olympus e-500 is a camera which is comfortable to hold, up to date with the latest technology, easy to use, every thing about this camera seems to be right. The low cost camera is guarantied to attract a large number of buyers and dominate the market in particular.
