Most of the digital camera manufacturers are offering 12 mega pixel cameras, the highest resolution available in the market today; Olympus has now entered the race with its 12-megapixel Olympus FE-300 which just an entry level camera considerably lower priced than the rest. The Olympus FE-300 boasts of a basic 3x optical lens, 2.5 inch LCD screen, Perfect Shot Preview and Smile Shutter. The camera is slender but solid in design, the metallic body feels very sturdy once held in the hand; despite of the “entry level” tag the camera does not feel cheap at all. This camera will definitely fit well in your pocket as it is only 0.87 inches thick. A wrist strap, a lithium-ion battery, battery charger, USB cable, AV cable, and CD-ROM with the Olympus Master 2 software come along with the Olympus FE-300.
The Olympus FE-300 can capture a total of 12 mega pixels; in the full resolution the images can measure up to 4000 x 3000 pixels while the size of the images taken in the SHQ mode is just a little less than 5 MB per piece. There is a 3x optical zoom lens on the Olympus FE-300 which extends from the body of the camera when it powered on, while the power is set to off the lens goes back into the body, the lens is protected by a built in lens cover. The lens covers a focal length in the range of 35-105mm. the performance of the lens is very good in deed, but one can find distortion at the wide angle. The built in flash on the camera can either be disabled, used in the auto mode or for red eye reduction. The flash on the Olympus FE-300 has an effective range up till a range of 1 foot to 20 feet at ISO 800 and at wide angle.
The Olympus FE-300 has an internal memory of 48 MB which can be further extended up to 2 GB with the help of XD- picture card; the images can be stored only as the JPEG files while the movie files are captured as AVI files. The Olympus FE-300 can be connected to your PC with the help of the USB cable or the AV cables which are both included in the kit along with the camera. The camera runs on a 740 mAh lithium – ion battery, it take an approximate of 5 hours to charge the battery which can take 250 – 300 shots per charge. The scene modes available on the Olympus FE-300 are Portrait, landscape, scene, and movie Night and Portrait, Sport, Indoor, Candle, Self Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Behind Glass, Cuisine, Documents, Auction, and Smile Shot [in which the camera apparently takes the shot once the subject is smiling.
On the whole the Olympus FE-300 is an ideal low budget camera for normal day to day use. So if you are looking for an easy to use, quality built camera, slim, low budget camera and the picture quality is not much of an issue to you then your search is over as the Olympus FE-300 satisfies all of these qualities.
