Olympus VN 4100

The VN4100 is a slim yet powerful pocket sized digital voice recorder which can record continuously for 144 hours. Features such as file management can be easily accessed by the thump pad present on top of the recorder. Options such as recording mode, recording time and voice activation can be comfortably accessed by the easy-to-use thumb pad.

The 4100 can record in four different modes XHQ for extra high quality, HQ for high-quality along with the SP and LP modes for the purpose of recording extension. The recorder has a LCD screen present on top of the thump pad and one can obtain information such as battery life, recording status and location search of a particular file. For in depth listening purposes one can control the speed of playback by the use of the thumb pad. This allows the recording to be played at speeds of 25 percent or 50 percent slower than the actual recording.

Looking at the storage capabilities in the VN 4100, this has four folders in which the sound recordings can be stored. Each folder has a maximum capacity of storing up to 100 files. One can easily delete a file or set of files, move files from one folder to another due to the presence of the easy file management functions. The recorder comes with an inbuilt voice activation feature which has the ability to extend the time of recording. The basic mechanism behind this is that the sound recording is only active when the microphone picks up on some sound. Thus it increases the recording time and the index marks is used to specify any random point in a recording so that it can be easily referenced later on. The start and ending time of a particular recoding can be specified by using the timer recording option.

The 4100 has dimensions of 4.0 x 1.54 x 0.77 inch or 101.6 x 39.1 x 19.6 mm and weighs as low as 2.22 ounces or 68.0 grams with the batteries included. The low weight and good shape makes the recorder extremely portable thus allowing people to carry it around in their pockets with ease. Not only is this easy to carry and a pleasure to use but the 4100 looks smart and elegant in the Champagne gold colour. One can record up to 8660 minutes by using the LP mode due the presence of a 256MB internal flash memory. The 4100 has an input level of 70dbv and the LCD screen present has dimensions of 23×25 mm. The recorder also boosts voice activation output, speaker having 120 mW power and 28mm diameter dynamic internal speaker. It also has Microphone Jack which gives you an option for adding an external microphone if required in 3.5 mm mini-jack. One can also use Earphone Jack with impedance 2 ohms and the recorder uses Two AAA batteries having impedance 8 ohms. The battery life can last up to 25 hours.

The sound output mode in the 4100 is mono and has a built in digital clock. The Digital player supported digital audio standards are CELP and ADPCM. The recorder has response bandwidth ranging between 300 – 7200 Hz.

The 4100 comes extremely handy while taking notes, in conferences, generating memos, leaving messages and while conduction interviews. The recording quality of the 4100 is very impressive and one does not have to pay a fortune to own it.

Overall the 4100 comes at a very reasonable price but still manages to perform well in the task for which it is meant. A couple of short comings with the battery life ending faster than what one might want and a bit of an odd user interfaces with the play and pause being different. But nonetheless this recorder surely is one that everybody would find really handy to not only use but also afford.
