While capturing picture stills has been a developed since over a century, one of the major developed that occurred in the world of photography, apart from the digital cameras and video recorders for films and televisions was the camcorder. This is device is a combination of being a camera and recorder. This is primarily a consumer video recording device, which is rather compact and easy to operate.

Amongst the earliest camcorders to be manufactured were by the following companies:

• Sony
• Kodak
However, these camcorders used an analog videotape. It was from he mid-1990s that companies began manufacturing these cameras with the digital video recorder. There was no more need for the video tapes, as they were being replaced by e compact video discs (VCD), and then came in the digital video discs (DVD).

Prior to the digital cameras and camcorders were the manually operated options. There the film based still cameras and the betamax recorders. The gadgets were rather large and bulky. It was in 1982 that Sony launched the first professional camcorder, which the company named, Betcam. Then in 1983 the company launched the Betamovie for consumers. These camcorders were rather bulky in comparison to today’s sleek models, but they nonetheless marked an important step towards the digital revolution.

Then in the 1990s, increasing camera-manufacturing companies entered the arena of camcorders. They were working towards outdo each other in competition, finding more novel means of recording better pictures and videos. And that is when the digital gadgets began to take the markets by a storm. Initially these devices were rather expensive, but over the years, price reductions and modified machines have made them all the more poplar amongst consumers. Today, this device is regarded as something between a necessity and comfort, depending on how much one spends of them.
