Sony Cyber Shot DSC N2
The N2 is a digital camera with breath taking looks coupled with some high end features. This is one of those cameras that anyone would love to get their hands on and its ultra stylish looks would surely make you appreciate its beauty. If looks are not enough this has a 3 inch touch LCD screen. Looking from a photographer’s perspective the camera has been employed with manual exposure mode thus allowing you decide what the shutter speed and aperture would be during the time of photography.
Having dimensions of 96.7 x 61.1 x 22.7mm and weighing 151g this one can easily be carried from one place to another. The N2 is a 10 mega pixel camera with 3 x optical zoom having focal length equivalent to 38 – 114 in 35mm format. It also has the feature of smart zoom which can only be used in lower resolutions. The smart zoom without actually reducing the picture quality can zoom up to a maximum of 17times. This has 3 inch touch LCD screen thus resulting in less buttons present on different sides of the camera which intern highlights the cameras smart and stylish looks.
Not only does the N2 look good but its picture quality is impressive aswell. The focusing and colour composition is managed well by the camera. The level of detailing of the subjects is good with sharpness maintained all throughout the picture. In some cases the focusing might falter towards the edges. Even while taking snaps of sceneries the photos come out sharp and colours come out natural and vibrant. Balance of the colours is maintained well all through the pictures. Camera maintains the same level of performance during indoor shots aswell. During low light conditions the pictures are sharply focused but some amount of red eye is visible. While working indoors even if the light conditions become extremely dim the N2 still seems to come out with proper results. Macro shots are nicely focused and sharp. Although some problems might occur while taking photos in the macro mode but they are can removed by using software such as paint shop. Macro shots can come within 6 cm of the subject to be pictured. Focusing distance can be specified and the N2 provides options in focusing area aswell as focusing method. The options present in focusing area are multi point, spot, and centre weighted. The various focusing methods are single and monitoring. There are a number of ISO levels available in the N2 but the photographs produced are nothing outstanding and more or less similar to what some of its competitors would provide. The ISO 400 level has some noise distortion while the ISO 1600 is best left untouched. The various ISO level included in the N2 are Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600. The shutter speed varies depending upon the mode choosen. In the auto mode it has a range of 1/8 to 1/2000 sec, while in Program Auto mode this range from 1″ to 1/2000 sec and in Manual mode the photographer can choose from 30″ to 1/1000 sec. The shutter lag is extremely fast with photographers able to take a single shot in 0.15 seconds and give consecutive shots in 7.60.seconds. With flash turned on this increases to 0.30 seconds for a single picture and 8.40 seconds for five pictures.
There are scene modes available for assisting the camera to use best settings possible depending on the conditions the photograph is taken in. The scene modes from which the user can choose are Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape, Snow, Beach and Fireworks. The N2 comes with an inbuilt flash and has a maximum range of 4.8m. The range of the flash decreases to 2.5m with the camera fully zoomed. The various flash modes present in the N2 are Auto, Forced Flash, Slow Synchro and No Flash. The red eye reduction feature can be turned on or off. The different white balance options available are Automatic, Cloudy, Daylight, Flash, Fluorescent and Incandescent. The maximum aperture is f2.8 (wide) and f5.4 (tele). There are two burst modes available in the N2. In the normal burst mode one can take four consecutive pictures. During the multi burst mode the camera takes 16 shots and then display them all in a 4 x 4 screen.
The N2 can capture movie with sound. There are two resolutions, 640 x 480 resolutions @ 30 frames per second and 160 x 112 @ 8.3 frames per second. Zoom cannot be used while filming so the camera needs to be zoomed before the photo capturing process begins. The N2 is compatible with computers, television sets and PictBridge compatible printers. Battery used by the N2 is a Lithium Ion (NP-BG1)/3.6V, 960 mAh. This also has power saver feature which gets activated after 3 minutes of inactiveness. This reduces the power consumption by the camera thus increasing the battery life. The N2 comes with a 25MB inbuilt memory and is compatible with Memory Stick Duo & MS Duo Pro cards.
Overall the N2 is quiet simply a work of art with some brilliant features and a stylish look which justifies the price tag attached to it by Sony. The best way to describe N2 is as a born winner.
